How tough are solar panels?
It’s one of the most common questions prospective customers ask when considering installing solar panels to meet their energy needs and lower their monthly expenses. Will this investment weather the storm, figuratively and literally?
At Electric Distribution & Design Systems, our owner, Thomas Edds, has seen a few things to write home about over the years. But, nothing quite like the picture at the top of this post.
Yes, that is a solar panel, proudly installed by EDDS on a home in East Dallas. And, yes, that is a bullet hole.
Happy New year
Shortly after midnight on January 1, 2006, the neighborhood celebration got a bit… exuberant. Shots were fired. No one was hurt. No one, that is, but the poor solar panel installed just a few days before.
Upon seeing the offending slug on New Year’s Day, the home owner called Tommy out to diagnose the damage. After 20 years in the solar panel installation game, Tommy knew that solar panels were tough. But, not even he suspected that they could catch a bullet in their teeth!
And the kicker? The panel was still fully functional. Despite a single node on the array needing to be replaced, the panel was still soaking in the suns rays and transferring power to the system. A little worse for ware ascetically, but, still doing the job.
At the end of the day, the bullet was excised, the home owner was happy, and Tommy got a great picture on his phone to show anyone who doubted just how strong his panels really are.
So, how tough are solar panels? Well, it appears to be no exaggeration to say they are bullet proof. If this panel can absorb a bullet, then the periodic hail storms and high winds of North Texas won’t even make’em wince.
